About Us

In 1962, Virgil Haney, an avid fisherman, golfer, inventor, and dreamer, had an idea to transform the cork bobber of the day into a radical new popping float for saltwater fishing. He patented his invention and started his new business in his garage. In 1964 the operation was moved from his garage to a dairy barn at Comal Tackle’s present location in Buda, Texas. There, with the help of his friend, Burris Roach, he started molding floats in close textured foam that still baffles the competition.

Robert Roach, Burris’ son, joined the company in 1966. The family tradition continued with the addition of Richard Haney, Virgil’s son, in 1968 and Clyde Roach, Robert’s brother, in 1977. Virgil’s sons, Richard and Robert, purchased the company in 1975 with Virgil remaining active in the company until his death in 1979. Burris Roach retired in 1985.

Richard took over complete operations in 1979. With Robert as plant manager and Clyde as production manager, Comal Tackle was an established brand at sporting goods and tackle distributors and retailers around the world. While maintaining a laid back atmosphere, Comal continued to develop new and innovative products. We also developed new ways to manufacture our products so we could continue to produce them in the United States. In addition, the company developed new warehouse and shipping procedures so that 99% of all orders will ship the day they are placed.

In 2005, Richard Haney retired. Keeping the Comal tradition, Richard’s nephews, Bryan and Rob Haney purchased his interest. Bryan became the new CEO and Richard’s son, Halsey, joined the company as Sales Manager. Although there are some new faces, Robert and Clyde still manage the day to day operations and our employees average over 10 years service with the company.

Today, Comal Tackle has grown to a 35,000 square foot facility with 25 employees. We manufacture over 3000 styles, sizes, and colors of bobbers, floats, stringers, and leaders. We distribute our floats to all fifty states and countries around the world. Comal Tackle remains committed to developing and producing the best products possible to fishermen without sacrificing our old fashion business principles.
